Hozier is the stage name of Andrew Hozier-Byrne, a singer and musician born in 1990 near Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. His father played jazz and blues drums at night, and Hozier started writing songs at 15, taught himself guitar and later began studying music at Trinity College Dublin. His debut single, “Take Me to Church” (2013), became a rock radio hit in the U.S., reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went multi-platinum in several countries. His music draws on folk, soul and blues, often with religious and literary imagery and a social-justice streak. Wasteland, Baby! (2019) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and Unreal Unearth (2023) topped the Irish and U.K. charts. In 2024 “Too Sweet,” from his EP Unheard, became his first No. 1 single in Ireland, the U.S. and the U.K. Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2025. Pitchfork’s review of Zach Bryan’s “Lies” even asked whether Bryan has “always sounded this much like Hozier.”
