The short answer: “Lodi When” is the opening track on Zach Bryan’s EP Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs, released Oct. 16, 2026. Muudsic’s take: it’s about what you want to be remembered for. Listen to “Lodi When”
Zach first teased the song with an acoustic snippet on YouTube on July 3, 2026 (Whiskey Riff), then played it on tour. The finished full-band version adds horns, strings, steel guitar and a chorus of gang vocals.
What is “Lodi When” about?
It sounds like a party and feels like a confession. Under that big singalong chorus, the song keeps asking one heavy question:
“Would you write about drinking or would you write about her?”
That line hits different once you know what else Zach was doing this year. He wrote a book. It shares the EP’s title and covers, in his official store’s words, “his vices and mistakes along with his victories and lessons.” It’s set to ship in January 2027.
Zach almost never does interviews, but in a two-hour talk with Matthew McConaughey on his own YouTube channel, he explained why he wrote it:
“If you don’t tell your own story, a thousand people will tell it for you, usually incorrectly.”
He also said this EP is the first project he ever made without drinking:
“I wrote every word sober and I sang every word sober.”
Is “Lodi When” about Lodi, California, or CCR’s “Lodi”?
Lodi is a real town in California’s Central Valley. But in music, “Lodi” has meant one thing since 1969, when Creedence Clearwater Revival released “Lodi,” a song about a broke musician stuck playing bars in a town he can’t leave. Billboard flagged the link in its EP review and pointed out that John Fogerty, who wrote the CCR song, opens some of Zach’s 2027 stadium dates.
Zach hasn’t said whether the title is a nod to Fogerty, a real place or a real person. Holler says the song leaves it open and lets listeners fill in the blanks.
Muudsic’s take: the trick is the word “when.” It turns a place into a time. “Lodi when” isn’t a spot on a map. It’s a stretch of your life, the version of you that was younger, wilder and maybe a little stuck. Everybody has a Lodi when.
“Lodi When” lyrics, explained (verse by verse)
We’re not reprinting the song here, since lyrics are copyrighted. Open the full “Lodi When” lyrics on Genius in another tab and follow along. Apple Music and Spotify show the lyrics in their apps too. Every short line we quote below was checked against Genius.
Lyrics: Zach Bryan; full lyrics licensed at Genius.
01Intro: the in-between
The song opens with a short prelude about life squeezed between being a younger man and the end of the road, and someone he found in the middle of it.
Muudsic’s take: it frames everything that follows as a look back from the middle of the story, not the end. Zach hasn’t said who the “you” is.
02Verse 1: the book question
This is where the title lives. It opens with the line we quoted up top, then asks whether you’d go back to her or back to “Lodi when.” It closes on a guy who made a mess of the songs he wrote. This is the verse Zach previewed in his July teaser.
Muudsic’s take: the book idea is the key. Zach really did write one, so the verse plays like the questions he was asking himself while writing it.
03Chorus: the wrong train
“Some dreamer took the wrong train”
The chorus is about time running out, and Billboard described the song as asking its questions “as the clock ticks down.”
Muudsic’s take: notice the switch from “you” to “some dreamer” and “he.” It’s like he steps back to look at his younger self from a distance. That’s the catchiest part of the song, and it’s also the saddest.
04Verse 2: the pain or the cure
The book question comes back with a twist. This time it’s whether you’d write about the pain or “write the cure.”
Muudsic’s take: it’s the first verse’s question, grown up. Read it next to what Zach told McConaughey about writing this whole EP sober, and it lands as a choice to tell the recovery story, not just the wreckage.
05Bridge: you can save yourself
“Just to find out you can save yourself”
After all that time spent looking for a savior, the singer realizes the rescue was up to him all along. One note: lyric sites disagree on the bridge’s last word, so check the full lyrics yourself.
Muudsic’s take: this is why a song this reflective sounds so upbeat. It isn’t stuck in regret. It looks back at the mess and still walks away lighter. Billboard called it “an engaging set opener.”
06Outro: no answer
The chorus comes back once more, then the song circles back to the questions from the first verse, ending on a question mark instead of an answer.
Muudsic’s take: leaving it unanswered is the point. You’re supposed to answer it for yourself.
What is “Lodi When” really about? Our take
Muudsic’s interpretation
Zach hasn’t explained “Lodi When,” so this part is ours. At its heart, the song is about looking back and deciding what you want to be remembered for. It’s the question every memoir has to answer: which story do you tell?
Verse 1 puts it plainly: drinking or her. Our read is that, for Zach, the story isn’t about the drinking anymore. He made this whole EP sober (“I wrote every word sober,” he told Matthew McConaughey, via Saving Country Music), and the song keeps circling back to her. Whether or not he ever goes back, it sounds like a man finally letting go of who he used to be.
“Only you can choose the path you’ll be remembered for.”
That’s why the bridge hits so hard. Verse 2 asks whether you’d write about the pain or “write the cure,” and the bridge answers it: you can save yourself. Nobody else gets to choose that path for you.
Why this muud: Between the Lines
📖 We picked Between the Lines for two reasons. First, this is a song you have to read between the lines to really get, because Zach never spells it out. Second, the song itself lives between two lines: who you were and who you want to be remembered as. It’s that stuck feeling between letting go of something you think you want and becoming who you want to be.
Best way to listen: headphones on, lyrics open. Runner-up muud: 🍂 Fall, for when the season has you thinking about who you used to be.
Your turn: what would you write about?
Zach’s question isn’t just for him. If you wrote your own “Lodi When,” what would it be about? The drinking or the person, the pain or the cure? What do you want to be remembered for?

“Lodi When” FAQ
What does “Lodi When” by Zach Bryan mean?
Zach hasn’t explained it. Muudsic’s take: it’s about what you want to be remembered for, when you’re stuck between who you were and who you want to be. The song asks whether his story should be about drinking or about her, and our read is that it ends up being about her, not the drinking, and about finally letting go. “Lodi when” turns a place into a time, an old version of yourself you can’t go back to, and the bridge lands on the idea that only you can save yourself.
What album is “Lodi When” on?
“Lodi When” is track 1 of 8 on Zach Bryan’s EP Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs. The EP came out on Belting Bronco Records under exclusive license to Warner Records, and it shares its title with Zach’s first book, a memoir set to ship in January 2027.
When did “Lodi When” come out?
The full song came out Oct. 16, 2026, with the rest of the EP. Zach first teased it on July 3, 2026, with an acoustic snippet on YouTube, which is also how he announced the EP’s title. He played it on his 2026 stadium tour before release.
Is “Lodi When” about Lodi, California?
Zach hasn’t said. Lodi is a real town in California’s Central Valley, but the song never describes the place. Holler notes the lyrics leave it open for listeners. Muudsic’s take: adding “when” makes Lodi feel more like a moment in time than a spot on a map.
Is “Lodi When” a reference to CCR’s “Lodi”?
Zach hasn’t confirmed it. Billboard pointed out the connection to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s 1969 song “Lodi,” about a musician stuck in a small town. CCR’s John Fogerty is also an opening act on some dates of Zach’s 2027 stadium tour, so the nod feels intentional, but that’s our read.
Who is “Lodi When” about?

Yes, by his own account. In his Oct. 16, 2026, interview with Matthew McConaughey, Zach said this EP is the first project he made without drinking: “I wrote every word sober and I sang every word sober.” He also said that, nine months in, he doesn’t even think about drinking when he writes anymore.
Who wrote and sings on “Lodi When”?
Zach Bryan wrote the song by himself and co-produced it with Jamie McLaughlin and Eddie Spear. According to the official Warner Records credits, the “gang vocals” include Zach, Samantha Bryan, Eddie Spear, Jamie McLaughlin and Adam Harris Lochemes, with backing vocals from Katy Kirby and others.
